The International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (ISSX) is the premier scientific organization for researchers interested in the metabolism and disposition of xenobiotics. ISSX was formed in 1981 when a small group of scientists, brought together during the 1970's under the aegis of the Gordon Research Conferences on Drug Metabolism, took the bold step of creating an international society to promote the interaction of scientists dedicated to the study of xenobiotics in living systems.
The study of xenobiotics (medicinal drugs, agricultural chemicals, industrial chemicals, environmental contaminants and other exogenous substances) encompasses the introduction into, distribution and transport throughout, interactions with and elimination of these compounds from biological systems. The studies on xenobiotics include the rates and extents of the processes and the biological consequences.
Goals of the Society
- To facilitate and encourage the assembly, acquaintanceship and association of scientists engaged in research in xenobiotic metabolism and in other related disciplines.
- To disseminate, discuss and publish results of research and related matters of interest in metabolism.
- To promote public awareness of chemical metabolism and its social and environmental implications.
- To promote education and training in the field.
Who Is ISSX?
ISSX has a strong international base of 2,250+ members from more than 50 countries. Members are evenly split between academic and industry groups and consist primarily of research scientists and future scientists in toxicology, pharmacology, molecular biology, and other disciplines related to the study of xenobiotics.
What Does ISSX Do?
As the foremost organization representing the interests of researchers and educators in the field of xenobiotics, the Society is engaged in multiple activities to support, promote, and advance the profession on a global scale. ISSX:
- Hosts the International Meeting, one of the world’s largest gatherings of researchers in xenobiotics, offering innovative short courses, symposia, lectures and other events.
- Hosts regional meetings and workshops in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America on a regular basis.
- Awards recognition of excellence in scientific and service achievements through the international Distinguished Scientific Achievement and Distinguished Service Awards, and the regional Scientific and New Investigator Awards.
- Offers opportunities for professional exposure through solicitation and publication of abstracts and poster presentations.
Membership Categories
- Regular Members - Any professional who is involved in research, teaching and/or public service and whose activities are related to the study of xenobiotics
- Members from Designated Countries - A professional from the any of countries listed here who meets the Regular Member requirements.
- Student or Postdoctoral Fellow Membership - Any graduate or postgraduate student or postdoctoral fellow involved in advanced training in any area related to the study of xenobiotics.
